Hoteikan Blog volume 6, March 2011
Greetings Members,
Well this has been quite a winter so far. Even in sunny Scottsdale, AZ, it's been chilly at times, but thankfully no snow! I hope the inclement weather has not kept you from working out.
During this winter I have been focusing more closely into the history & origins of Karate. I came across a book that is very inciteful and distinct in it's perspective of the origins. I highly recommend it as a must read. The title is: Shotokan's Secrets...expanded edition (the hidden truth behind karate's origin), by Bruce D. Clayton.
While the Hoteikan System is rich in tradition, we are also very progressive in our approach to self defense in the 21st century. Understanding how karate originated helps us to analyze techniques and apply practical applications to today's environment. You need to know where you've been, in order to know where you're going.
System News:
1) We are finalizing the details for the 8th annual West Point Seminar. To date we have the following Master Instructors committed to the event: O Sensei Lou Ferrer-US Kodokan, Grandmaster Vincent Miranda-USA Goju, Shihan Elba "Cookie" Melendez, Shihan Louis Ruperto-Koro-Do Ninjutsu.
2) The Desert Warriors from Arizona have 10 members committed to the event. We hope to see at least double that from our sister dojos.
3) The United Studios Seminar/Grappling tournament was a big hit. The Hoteikan instructors put on quite a show during the seminar portion.
4) The New Bushido group in South Dakota is doing well at their new facility. Please continue to wish them well.
That's all for now. I'll see you all at West Point in April!!
Ous!
Soke Saint
