The roots of this modern Art can be traced to 1650 AD and the Sosuishi Ryu Jujutsu. The Hoteikan Jujitsu System uses time-tested techniques from this Ryu, in addition to modified techniques that reflect the conditions and situations existing today.

The Hoteikan Jujitsu System accomplishes this through training in the following 10 principles:

1. Two-person Kata: Pre-arranged movements for technical proficiency.
2. Tai-Sabaki theory and application: The Art of body movement and evasion.
3. Awareness recognition and reaction: Situational understanding.
4. Joint locks and manipulation: Body control.
5. Strikes and kicks: Percussion techniques.
6. Strangulation techniques: The Art of restricting the airway and blood flow.
7. Combat Jujitsu throws: Precursor techniques of Judo.
8. Grappling and submissions: The Art of ground control.
9. Combat self-defense: Real-life situation defense.
10. Weapons defense: Modern and ancient weapons recognition and defense.
